Candy Store
A CXP Brief The Evolution of The Candy Store

In today’s environment my suggestion to compete as a candy store in the candy industry is to:

1.  Have a variety of Products to Sell and Available in Short Lead Time
2.  Offer Outstanding Customer Service
3.  Have Excellent Placement on the Search Engines

The candy industry has gone through many changes.  Three generations ago, back in the 1940s candy stores were very popular ways for folks to make a living.  The large distribution centers did not yet exist and the candy business was very much a mom and pop type operation.  As the candy industry evolved larger candy stores came about and there became a sorting out in the industry.  The candy store evolved and gained market share.

During the 1960s there were many small to medium sized candy stores that sold candy.  Many of them also sold snacks and tobacco products.  Through the 70’s and 80’s a typical candy store had a real good market to work in.  Frequently a candy store would also sell tobacco and at this time tobacco sales were particularly lucrative.  Then during the 1980’s and 90’s competition became tougher for the candy store.

In the 1980s and 90’s the large merchandisers came about and to be big was big.  The Wal-Mart’s of the world, Sams Clubs, Coscos really put pressure on the candy store.  Many of the medium size candy stores had to merge or were bought out.  This was simply to be able to have the volume necessary to buy direct from the manufacturers.  Another strategy was to stay small and offer service to a tightly held customer base.  Either way times changed.  In addition to the pressure of the large merchandisers the tobacco industry changed.

Back in the 60’s and 70’s tobacco sales offered great profits for a candy store.  With antismoking campaigns in the 90’s being in full force, particularly in the United States cigarette sales plummeted.  So in order to make a living the candy store owner had to profit from candy and snack sales.  With buying direct getting tougher due to the competition with the larger merchandisers like Wal-Mart many family businesses were bought, forced to merge or simply went out of business.

In today’s candy store market the times are still very challenging as in many industries.  Currently opportunities for exporting seem logical as well as expanding market share through online candy store sales.  An advantage the smaller candy store has over the large merchandiser is product variety and service.  As in many industries service is becoming a major differentiator.  In the online candy store business I find that many sales can be made by simply being the first to answer the phone and having the product available for sale.  The, I need it now customer is always a treat.

In today’s environment my suggestion to compete as a candy store in the candy industry is to:

1.  Have a variety of Products to Sell and Available in Short Lead Time
2.  Offer Outstanding Customer Service
3.  Have Excellent Placement on the Search Engines
